What is a microchip and why is it important
A microchip is a tiny transponder the size of a grain of rice, that carries a unique identification code. It is a permanent identification system that is implanted under your pet's skin and can be read by a microchip scanner. The microchip code has to be registered in a database (e.g. with AVS) together with contact details of its owner in order for the pet to be traced to its owner. Microchips are the best form of permanent identification for your pet. Microchipped pets have a higher chance of being returned to their owners should they go missing. Microchipping is also a responsible breeder’s assurance to buyers that puppies being sold are traceable and identifiable.
It is mandatory for pet dogs in Singapore to have their microchip registered with AVS. A microchip is often mandatory for the importation and exportation of pets (cats and dogs) overseas.
How are microchips implanted?
The microchip will be implanted under the loose skin between your pet’s shoulder blades using an injector. The microchip will reveal a code that is unique to the pet when the chip is scanned.
